Tabakaria Chania

Tanneries were created in the middle of the 19th century as leather processing factories also known as “tanneries”.

The main installations of the buildings were made during the Egyptian rule (1830-1840) while their location was chosen according to the assumption that it was far enough from the city of Chania next to a shallow sea, the water of which served in the first stage of the processing of the skins.

The Tabakaria flourished during the interwar period. They stopped operating during the German Occupation to make a strong comeback after the end of the war. The decline of Tabakarias came gradually in the 1970s until today only one tenth of them operate as businesses.

Today most of the tanneries are abandoned while some of them have changed use. The only element that has remained untouched by time is the imposing architecture of Tabakaria. The buildings have an entrance from the road and from the sea side are two or three steps.

Tombs of Venizelos

In the eastern part of Chania’s Cape, the tombs of Eleftherios Venizelos and his son can be found. A beautiful park surrounds the tombs, shaded by pine trees, featuring gardens, paved floors, stairs, terraces, and incredible views of Chania city.
Opposite each other are the tombs of Eleftherios Venizelos and his son Sophocles. Notably, the tomb of Eleftherios Venizelos bears an iron-lettered inscription of his speech to the Greek parliament in April 1932.

The Statue of Liberty (by Spyros Kagialedakis) commemorates the Cape Revolution of February 9, 1897, when Spyros Kagialedakis raised the Greek flag, symbolizing the Cretans’ struggle for freedom.

The monastery of Prophet Elias, a historical sacred temple from the 16th century, bears the scars of looting.

Archaeological Museum of Chania

Explore the archaeological museum, an additional gem in the city of Chania, renowned for its architecture and exhibits. Situated in Halepa, the second most important area in the Chania prefecture after Venice, the museum’s exterior resembles a ship emerging from the earth, carrying its treasures and rich exhibits. The northern part of the building provides an amazing view of the beachfront, while the laboratories in the southern part are flooded with abundant natural light.
The Archaeological museum aims to highlight the greatness of the Minoan past through its exhibits, contributing to cultural elevation and serving as a magnet for “museum tourism.” Operating from 08:00 to 20:00, the museum is closed all day on Tuesdays.

The home of Eleftherios Venizelos

The Residence – Museum “Eleftherios K. Venizelos” is classified as an authentic (documentary) home, recounting the life of Eleftherios Venizelos and preserving authentic items, many in their original positions. This museum goes beyond being a repository of collections or the original furniture of a bygone era; it is the result of a collective and integrated museological project, capable of recalling the past, giving the monument great social and political significance.
The Museum – Residence of Eleftherios Venizelos consists of 3 floors and has a total of 18 visitable rooms or stations in its route. The ground floor and part of the first floor are exactly as delivered to the Foundation by the Venizelos family. Subsequently, five rooms present Venizelos’s actions, divided into topics such as “The Rebel,” “The Politician,” “The Diplomat,” “The Man,” and “The Myth,” complete with visual material and original museum objects from the Foundation’s Collection. Two “stations” also present the assassination attempts against Venizelos in 1920 and 1933, with original documents and visual material. In the attic, an interactive-educational exhibition, donated by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, guides the visitor through history, enhancing the museum experience and information uptake.

The power of a museum lies in its ability to communicate with its guests. The entire effort aims not only to impart maximum knowledge from a place steeped in memories but also to encourage essential and fruitful interaction with the past. This objective gains strength, especially in appealing to young people and students visiting the Venizelos residence, connecting them with Modern Greek history.
